About the Irish War of Independence & Civil War
Ireland's revolutionary conflicts from 1916 to 1923 included the Easter Rising, the War of Independence against British rule, and the Civil War over the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The treaty created the Irish Free State while Northern Ireland remained within the United Kingdom. Fighting between supporters and opponents of the settlement ended with the victory of the Free State government.
Geography of the Irish War of Independence & Civil War
The Easter Rising centered on Dublin, while the War of Independence spread through towns and rural districts across Ireland. County Cork and other southern and western areas saw major guerrilla operations, and the northeast experienced severe communal violence. The Civil War began with fighting in Dublin and extended across the Free State, including Munster and the west. Roads, railway lines, barracks, and difficult rural terrain influenced ambushes, troop movements, and control of local communities.
