About the French Revolutionary Wars
The French Revolutionary Wars (1792–1802) were conflicts between revolutionary France and coalitions of European states seeking to contain its power or reverse the revolution. French armies defended the new republic and expanded its influence through conquest and allied republics. The wars also enabled Napoleon's rise and ended with settlements that provided only a brief peace.
Geography of the French Revolutionary Wars
The main fronts lay along France's northern and eastern borders, in the Low Countries, the Rhineland, northern Italy, and Switzerland. Campaigns also reached the Iberian frontier and the Mediterranean, including Napoleon's expedition to Egypt and Syria. Naval and colonial operations extended into the Caribbean and other overseas regions. Border fortresses, Alpine routes, major rivers, and seaborne supply shaped the shifting fronts around France and its expanding sphere of influence.
