About the Colonial Frontier Wars

Colonial Frontier Wars is a collective term for conflicts involving European colonies and Indigenous nations in eastern North America between 1622 and 1774. These wars grew from expanding settlement, disputes over land and trade, and shifting alliances among Native peoples and European powers. They repeatedly altered colonial frontiers and caused severe loss, displacement, and destruction of communities.

Geography of the Colonial Frontier Wars

The conflicts ranged from coastal Virginia and New England to the southeastern interior, the Great Lakes, and the Ohio Valley. Important theaters included the Chesapeake region, the Connecticut River valley, and routes linking inland settlements with colonial forts and ports. Forests, waterways, and widely scattered communities favored raids and small expeditions alongside larger campaigns. As settlement expanded, fighting increasingly moved inland across the Appalachian frontier.
