About the Balkan Wars
The Balkan Wars (1912–1913) were two conflicts that transformed southeastern Europe. In the first, the Balkan League drove the Ottoman Empire from most of its remaining European territories. In the second, Bulgaria fought former allies and other neighboring states over the division of the conquered lands, suffering major territorial losses.
Geography of the Balkan Wars
The wars took place chiefly in Macedonia, Thrace, Albania, Kosovo, and neighboring Balkan regions. Armies fought around cities including Adrianople, now Edirne, and Thessaloniki, while the first war reached the Ottoman defenses outside Constantinople. The second war spread into Bulgaria and included a Romanian advance from the north. Mountains, river valleys, and limited railway networks shaped campaigns, while control of Aegean ports and islands influenced access to the sea.
