About the Arab-Israeli Wars

The Arab-Israeli Wars from 1948 to 1973 were a series of conflicts between Israel and neighboring Arab states, intertwined with the struggle over Palestine and the displacement of Palestinians. Major wars occurred in 1948, 1956, 1967, and 1973, altering borders and control of territory. Their outcomes produced lasting occupation, refugee crises, and diplomatic disputes, while also opening later paths toward negotiated agreements.

Geography of the Arab-Israeli Wars

The principal theaters included Israel, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, and the Golan Heights on the Syrian front. Fighting also involved Lebanon and Jordan and the approaches to important regional cities. The Suez Canal, desert routes through Sinai, the Jordan valley, and high ground along the Syrian frontier were major strategic features. Short distances between population centers and contested borders made control of roads, passes, and defensible terrain especially important.
