About Hillsborough Castle & Gardens
Hillsborough Castle was built in the eighteenth century as a Georgian mansion for the Hill family, prominent local landowners who later held the title of Marquess of Downshire. It replaced an earlier fortified house on the site and served as the family's grand residence. The estate later became an official government residence in Northern Ireland.
