About Henry Knox Trail Marker NY-27

Henry Knox’s winter artillery expedition passed this route in 1775–1776 while transporting captured cannon from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. The difficult movement across New York and Massachusetts supplied Washington with the heavy guns later placed on Dorchester Heights, forcing the British evacuation.

HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Henry Knox Trail Marker NY-27

In the winter of 1775–1776, Henry Knox passed through this part of Columbia County while transporting artillery captured at Fort Ticonderoga to George Washington's army outside Boston. Knox had proposed using the guns to break the siege's stalemate. With crews, oxen, horses, and heavy sledges, he moved fifty-nine cannon, mortars, and howitzers—about sixty tons—across lakes, rivers, steep roads, mud, snow, and thin ice. The route through eastern New York and western Massachusetts demanded constant improvisation when sledges broke or loads sank. The artillery reached Cambridge in late January 1776. Washington placed guns on Dorchester Heights in March, compelling the British army and fleet to evacuate Boston on March 17.

The event belongs to a war fought as much through movement, supply, intelligence, and control of roads as through set-piece battles. Local civilians provided food, horses, shelter, labor, and information, sometimes willingly and sometimes under compulsion. The same landscape could be traversed by militia, regular soldiers, refugees, prisoners, and raiding parties within a short span of time. Recovering the location helps explain why commanders chose particular routes and why seemingly modest crossings, houses, churches, and hills acquired strategic value.

The marker fixes this history to a surviving point in the modern landscape. Although roads, shorelines, buildings, and political boundaries have changed, standing near the recorded location makes the distances and terrain of the episode more intelligible. It also invites comparison between concise commemorative wording and the more complicated historical record, in which strategy, personal choice, civilian experience, and later memory all shaped the meaning of the place. Its significance comes from the way a specific local place preserves evidence of the larger struggles that created the United States. Reading the event at landscape scale clarifies the practical decisions, risks, and human consequences that a short date or marker inscription can only summarize.
