Hatfield House survives as a large Jacobean mansion largely unaltered externally, standing alongside the surviving west wing of the older Royal Palace of Hatfield, including its great hall. It remains the private property of the Marquess of Salisbury and the Cecil family. The house and gardens are open to the public on a ticketed, seasonal basis.
About Hatfield House (Jacobean House), Hertfordshire
Hatfield House was built between 1607 and 1611 for Robert Cecil, First Earl of Salisbury and chief minister to King James I, as a Jacobean prodigy house. It incorporated a surviving wing of the older royal palace of Hatfield, where Elizabeth I had spent part of her childhood. The house remained the ancestral seat of the Cecil family.
