Do not plan on entering the courtyard until the library announces reopening. The museum remains a separate visit; check its current hours and security guidance. The library currently states that the courtyard and gravesites are temporarily closed for landscaping; it normally allows free graveside visits without a museum ticket. The museum remains open.

About Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum courtyard

The courtyard of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library is the burial place of President Harry S. Truman, Bess Truman, Margaret Truman Daniel and E. Clifton Daniel Jr.

The library is reworking its exterior landscaping in 2026. Its operator says the graves will remain undisturbed while the courtyard is temporarily closed.

The presidential library opened in 1957. Truman used an office there almost daily from 1957 to 1966, meeting visitors and helping direct library activities.

Truman died in 1972 and was buried in the courtyard following a funeral in the library auditorium. Bess Truman was buried beside him in 1982; their daughter Margaret and son-in-law Clifton Daniel also rest in the courtyard.
