The Elizabethan house survives largely as built, with its distinctive tall glazed facade, original plasterwork, and an extensive collection of period tapestries and furnishings. It is owned and managed by the National Trust as a Grade I listed building. The hall and its gardens are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire
Hardwick Hall was built in the 1590s for Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury, one of the wealthiest women in Elizabethan England, to designs attributed to architect Robert Smythson. Renowned for its vast expanses of glass, summed up in the saying that it held more glass than wall, it displayed her wealth among the prodigy houses.
