About Happy Retreat-Charles Washington House
Happy Retreat was the home of Charles Washington, George Washington’s brother and founder of Charles Town. George visited the estate, but no specific wartime event is documented here. Its Revolutionary association rests on the Washington family and Charles’s place within the Virginia community that supported independence.
Friends of Happy Retreat owns the house, outbuildings and two acres; Charles Town owns ten surrounding acres. It reports a restored west-wing parlor with reproduced chair rails based on surviving pieces. East-wing work remains a separate project, and its interior was replaced in the 1900s. The site combines historic fabric and later adaptation.
