Handsell stood in a region repeatedly raided by British forces operating along Maryland's Eastern Shore between 1779 and 1781. These expeditions sought provisions, boats, livestock, and intelligence while intimidating communities that supported independence. Nearby houses suffered damage, and raiders carried away property and enslaved people, including a man taken from Henry Steele. Archaeological and documentary evidence suggests Handsell may have been burned or badly damaged during this period. Its history shows how naval mobility allowed the British to bring war directly to dispersed Chesapeake plantations long after the main armies had shifted elsewhere.
