The house survives substantially as built in the seventeenth century, with its original brick facade, state rooms, and much of its collection of furniture, textiles, and paintings intact, set within restored formal gardens. It is owned and managed by the National Trust. The house and gardens are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Ham House, Richmond, London
Ham House was built in 1610 for Sir Thomas Vavasour, a courtier of King James I, near Richmond on the Thames. It was enlarged in the 1670s by John and Elizabeth Maitland, Duke and Duchess of Lauderdale, to display Stuart-era wealth and influence. The house became known for its lavish interiors and role in Restoration court society.
