Hall and Sellers established the first press west of the Susquehanna at York and performed essential work when the Continental Congress met there from September 1777 through June 1778. The British occupation of Philadelphia displaced Congress and many government functions. From this press came congressional resolutions, official forms, proclamations, and Continental currency needed to pay troops and purchase supplies. Printing turned political decisions into documents that could circulate through the states, making the shop part of the improvised machinery that kept the revolutionary government operating during crisis.
