The site preserves the stone signal station tower and adjoining former military buildings built to relay messages between coastal garrisons, with the structures restored for their present museum use rather than left as ruins. It is administered by the Barbados National Trust. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Gun Hill Signal Station
The British colonial military built Gun Hill Signal Station in 1818 as part of a chain of stations across Barbados used to warn of slave uprisings and approaching ships. Positioned on a ridge, it communicated by flag signal with other stations and the garrison at Bridgetown. It formed part of the island's colonial defense and surveillance system.
