HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Grime's Graves, Norfolk.

Grime's Graves preserves a large field of Neolithic flint mine shafts and pits visible as grassy hollows across the site, with one shaft excavated and fitted with a ladder for descent to view the flint galleries below, the rest remaining unexcavated earthworks. It is managed by English Heritage as a scheduled monument. The site is open to the public on a ticketed seasonal basis, with access to the open ground and the one accessible shaft.

About Grime's Graves, Norfolk

Neolithic communities dug Grime's Graves around 2000 BCE as a complex of flint mines, sinking deep shafts into chalk to extract high-quality flint. Miners used antler picks to work radiating galleries beneath each shaft. The flint quarried there was worked into axes and tools traded across Britain, making the site a key source for Neolithic toolmaking.
