HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Grianán of Aileach.

The stone ringfort survives as a substantially reconstructed structure, its massive circular walls and internal stairways rebuilt in the nineteenth century on the ancient foundations, with little of the original fabric exposed. It stands in state care, generally maintained by Ireland's National Monuments Service. The hilltop site is freely accessible to visitors at all times.

About Grianán of Aileach

Grianán of Aileach is a stone ringfort built on a hilltop that had served as a place of ritual significance since prehistoric times. Tradition holds it as a seat of the Uí Néill kings, though the surviving structure's precise date remains uncertain. It was reportedly destroyed in 1101 by the Munster king Muirchertach Ua Briain during a dynastic conflict.
