Grey Abbey survives as a substantial roofless ruin of a former Cistercian monastery, with its church nave, chancel, and cloister walls standing to varying heights amid the surrounding graveyard, though its roof and monastic outbuildings are long lost. It is in the care of the Northern Ireland Department for Communities as a state care historic monument. The ruins stand in open ground and are freely accessible to visitors.
About Grey Abbey
Grey Abbey was founded around 1193 as a Cistercian monastery on the shores of Strangford Lough, traditionally endowed by Affreca, wife of the Anglo-Norman lord John de Courcy. Monks from Cumbria settled the house, which functioned as a center of prayer and agriculture until its dissolution in the sixteenth century. It later saw use as a parish church.
