HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Greensted Church, Essex.

The nave preserves split oak log walls traditionally dated to the Anglo-Saxon or medieval period and often cited as the oldest wooden church structure in the world, though the timbers have been repaired and partly replaced over the centuries and the chancel and other elements are later additions. It remains a Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Chelmsford. It is an active place of worship, freely open to visitors.

About Greensted Church, Essex

Greensted's timber nave, built of split oak trunks in the eleventh century, is regarded as the oldest wooden church structure in the world. It served as a small parish church for the local farming community. Tradition holds that the body of the martyred king Edmund rested here overnight in 1013 on its way to Bury St Edmunds.
