HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Great Sphinx of Giza.

The limestone monolith survives largely as carved in antiquity, though its nose and much of its ceremonial beard are lost, with beard fragments now in museum collections, and its paws and body have been reinforced with masonry repairs over the centuries. It stands on the Giza Plateau within the Memphis and its Necropolis World Heritage Site and is administered by Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Great Sphinx of Giza

The Great Sphinx was carved from a limestone outcrop during the Old Kingdom, traditionally attributed to Pharaoh Khafre in the third millennium BCE, though the attribution is disputed. It stood as a guardian figure beside the Giza pyramid complex, combining a lion's body with a royal or divine head. The monument embodied royal and solar authority within Egypt's funerary landscape.
