HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Great Mosque of Tlemcen.

The hypostyle prayer hall, horseshoe and lambrequin arches, carved stucco mihrab, and minaret survive from the original medieval mosque, with later Almohad and Ottoman era additions layered onto the Almoravid core. It is administered by Algeria's state religious affairs authority as a protected historic monument and remains a functioning mosque. As an active place of worship, its courtyard is generally open to visitors, though access to the prayer hall itself may be limited for non-Muslims.

About Great Mosque of Tlemcen

The Almoravid dynasty founded the Great Mosque of Tlemcen in the late eleventh century, part of its expansion of Maliki Islam across the Maghreb. The Zayyanid ruler Yaghmurasan later enlarged the complex and added its minaret in the thirteenth century. The mosque's carved wooden minbar and horseshoe arches made it a foremost example of Almoravid religious architecture.
