Alexander Hamilton’s grave in Trinity Churchyard marks the resting place of one of the Revolution’s most consequential soldiers and statesmen. Born in the Caribbean, Hamilton arrived in the mainland colonies as a teenager and embraced the American cause soon after fighting began. He organized an artillery company in New York in 1776 and served during the campaigns around New York City and New Jersey. His ability, energy, and command of military administration brought him to George Washington’s attention. In March 1777, Hamilton joined Washington’s military family as a lieutenant colonel and aide-de-camp.

For roughly four years, Hamilton worked at the center of Continental Army headquarters. He drafted correspondence, conveyed orders, negotiated prisoner exchanges, and helped Washington coordinate an army spread across several states. The position gave him an unusually broad understanding of the Revolution’s military and political problems. Hamilton nevertheless wanted a field command. After leaving Washington’s staff in 1781, he received command of a light-infantry battalion during the Yorktown campaign. On the night of October 14, he led American troops in a rapid bayonet assault that captured British Redoubt 10. The seizure of that position helped the allied American and French armies complete their siege lines and contributed directly to Cornwallis’s surrender.

Hamilton remained deeply involved in the nation created by the Revolution. He served in the Confederation Congress, helped organize the Constitutional Convention, wrote much of The Federalist, and became the first secretary of the treasury. His financial program sought to give the federal government the credit and administrative strength that he believed the wartime Confederation had lacked. These policies also produced fierce political opposition and helped create the first American party system.

Hamilton died on July 12, 1804, one day after Aaron Burr mortally wounded him in a duel at Weehawken, New Jersey. New Yorkers mourned him with an elaborate public funeral before he was buried here in the south churchyard of Trinity Church. His prominent monument now stands among the graves of numerous other Continental officers, including Horatio Gates, Marinus Willett, and John Lamb. A nearby memorial erected by the New York State Society of the Cincinnati honors Hamilton and fellow original members of that hereditary organization of Revolutionary officers. The grave therefore commemorates more than Hamilton’s dramatic death. It links the political architect of the early republic to his formative service in Washington’s army and to the broader community of officers whose wartime experiences shaped the United States.
