HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Grand Popo Historic Town.

The town retains scattered colonial-era buildings, remnants of an old trading post, and traditional lakeside architecture, rather than a single preserved monument or restored historic quarter. It falls under Beninese local government administration, with no distinct national heritage designation confirmed. The town is freely accessible and inhabited, functioning as an ordinary coastal and lakeside community.

About Grand Popo Historic Town

Grand-Popo developed from the sixteenth century as a coastal town on the Slave Coast, becoming a hub for trade in goods and, later, enslaved people among European merchants and local Aja and Gen communities. Portuguese, French, and other European traders operated posts there over the following centuries. The town's economy was shaped by its central role in Atlantic coastal commerce.
