The site consists of extensive dry stone ruins attributed to the Chachapoya culture, including circular structures, terracing, and defensive walls spread across a remote mountainous area. It falls under the protection of Peru's national cultural heritage authorities. Access is difficult, with the ruins lying in open, largely unrestored ground reached mainly on foot or by guided trek.
About Gran Vilaya
Builders of the Chachapoya culture constructed the stone complex of Gran Vilaya in the cloud forests of northern Peru beginning around the ninth century, as a network of circular houses, terraces, and pathways. The site formed part of a dense regional settlement pattern rather than a single monument. It reflects Chachapoya social organization before the Inca conquest.
