HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Gortyn (Gortyna).
The site preserves extensive Roman and Byzantine ruins, including the odeon, the Praetorium, remains of basilicas, and inscribed law code fragments, spread across a large open archaeological area. It is managed by the Greek Ministry of Culture through the local ephorate of antiquities. It is open to the public as a ticketed archaeological site.
About Gortyn (Gortyna)
Gortyn was inhabited from the early Bronze Age and grew into a leading city-state of ancient Crete. It is best known for the Gortyn Code, an inscribed law text of the fifth century BCE regulating property, inheritance, and family matters. Under Roman rule it became capital of the province of Crete and an early center of Christianity.
