The Gonzales Memorial Museum functions today as a working history museum and community gathering space rather than as a site tied to any prior agricultural or civic use, since the building itself was purpose-built as a memorial. Constructed in 1936-37 as a Texas Centennial and Works Progress Administration project, the Art Deco structure was designed by the architectural firm Phelps and Dewees to honor the Immortal 32, the Gonzales men who rode to reinforce the Alamo, as well as the town's role in the opening battle of the Texas Revolution. Its centerpiece exhibit is the small bronze cannon associated with the 1835 Battle of Gonzales and the Come and Take It flag and slogan, displayed alongside artifacts documenting the town's founding and its part in the Texas independence movement. The museum's two exhibition wings host rotating displays on regional and Texas Revolution history, while an outdoor amphitheater seating several hundred people is used for public performances, ceremonies, and civic events. In recent years the site has added an evening light show projected on its facade, drawing evening visitors alongside daytime school groups and tourists. Operated by the City of Gonzales, the museum serves both as an educational institution preserving Texas Revolution history and as an active community venue, making it a heritage and tourism anchor for the town rather than a preserved historic structure from the 1836 era itself.
