About Gloucester Skirmish / King’s Run Battle Site
The Gloucester skirmish was fought near the Delaware River in November 1777 during the Philadelphia campaign. Lafayette helped direct an American attack against a British outpost and its Hessian troops. The encounter unfolded across terrain now divided among several developed New Jersey communities.
A relocated monument near Cherry Hill Mall supplies a commemorative reference, but its inscription contains a conflicting date. The monument's present location is not a verified battlefield center.
History happened here at Gloucester Skirmish / King’s Run Battle Site
On November 25, 1777, Lafayette's force attacked an outpost near Gloucester. Hessian troops resisted, and British reinforcements influenced the withdrawal toward Gloucester. A contemporary map associated with Michel du Chesnoy preserves evidence of positions and movements during the encounter.
The action strengthened Lafayette's military reputation within the American campaign. Later urban growth and monument relocation complicated its geography. The verified November chronology should remain separate from the monument's erroneous March wording, and the site must not be confused with fighting at Gloucester, Massachusetts.
