Much of the original Norman nave with its massive cylindrical piers, the Norman crypt, the fan-vaulted cloisters, and the fifteenth-century Perpendicular Gothic choir and central tower survive largely intact, with the east window ranking among the largest medieval stained glass in England. The cathedral is administered by the Dean and Chapter of Gloucester Cathedral within the Church of England and is a Grade I listed building. It remains an active place of worship and is open to visitors.
About Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucestershire
Gloucester Cathedral began as a Benedictine abbey church founded in 1089 on the site of an earlier Saxon minster. It became a major pilgrimage site after the burial of the murdered King Edward II in 1327, funding a Gothic rebuilding of the choir. At the dissolution of the monasteries in 1541 it was refounded as an Anglican cathedral.
