HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Glenfinnan Viaduct.
The curved mass concrete railway viaduct, built with twenty one arches spanning the valley near the head of Loch Shiel, survives intact and remains in active use carrying trains on the West Highland Line. It is owned and maintained by Network Rail. The viaduct itself is not open to walk on, but it is freely visible from a nearby public viewpoint and walking path.
About Glenfinnan Viaduct
The Glenfinnan Viaduct was built between 1897 and 1901 by contractor Robert McAlpine for the West Highland Railway's extension from Fort William to Mallaig. It was among the earliest large structures built of mass concrete rather than stone or iron, spanning the valley on twenty-one arches. It opened remote parts of the western Highlands to rail travel.
