Its minister, the Reverend John Agnew, openly defended allegiance to George III as resistance hardened into revolution. Parishioners and local Patriots drove him from the church for preaching loyalty to the Crown. Agnew subsequently joined Lord Dunmore, Virginia's royal governor, and served the Loyalist cause.
