HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Glasgow Necropolis.

The necropolis preserves several thousand Victorian monuments, mausolea, obelisks, and statuary spread across its hillside grounds above the cathedral, including the prominent Knox monument, essentially original nineteenth century funerary fabric rather than reconstruction. It is owned and maintained by Glasgow City Council, which oversees it as a historic burial ground within a protected landscape. The site is freely accessible to the public as an open cemetery and park, with pathways open throughout the grounds.

About Glasgow Necropolis

Glasgow Necropolis opened in 1833 as a Victorian garden cemetery on a hill beside Glasgow Cathedral, modeled on Père Lachaise in Paris. It became the burial ground for many of Glasgow's merchants, industrialists, and civic leaders during the city's nineteenth-century commercial expansion. The cemetery's elaborate monuments reflected the wealth and status of Glasgow's Victorian mercantile class.
