HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Glasgow Cathedral.
The cathedral preserves its complete medieval structure, including the nave, choir, and a rare intact lower church housing the traditional tomb of Saint Mungo, with little loss beyond its original twin west towers, removed in the nineteenth century. It is held in state care by Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument and category A listed building. It remains an active Church of Scotland parish church, freely open to the public.
About Glasgow Cathedral
Glasgow Cathedral was built from the twelfth century onward as the seat of the Bishop of Glasgow, on the traditional site of the tomb of Saint Mungo, the city's patron saint. It became a major medieval pilgrimage destination and one of Scotland's principal ecclesiastical centers. At the Reformation it was converted to Protestant parish worship.
