HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Gheriat el-Garbia Roman Fort, Limes Tripolitanus.

The site preserves the stone walls, corner towers, and gateway of a Roman frontier fort along the Limes Tripolitanus, standing largely unexcavated and exposed in the open desert. It falls under the nominal authority of Libya's Department of Antiquities, though its remote location has left it without active on site management. The ruins are unenclosed and can be reached only by unrestricted overland travel.

About Gheriat el-Garbia Roman Fort, Limes Tripolitanus

Roman military authorities built this fort as part of the Limes Tripolitanus, the frontier system that protected Tripolitania's farming communities from raids out of the pre-desert. It stood among a chain of forts, towers, and patrol roads guarding oases and caravan routes along the empire's southern edge. The system reflected Rome's effort to manage relations with desert peoples.
