The site preserves the earthen mudbrick ruins of the ancient Garamantian capital, including remnants of fortification walls and adjacent pyramidal and mound tombs in the surrounding necropolis, most of it unexcavated and unreconstructed. It falls under the nominal jurisdiction of Libya's Department of Antiquities. Ongoing instability in the region limits access, and the ruins stand largely unguarded in open desert ground.
About Germa, Ancient Garamantian Capital
Germa served as the capital of the Garamantes, a Saharan civilization that flourished from roughly the mid first millennium BCE into the early medieval period. The Garamantes built an extensive network of underground foggara channels to draw fossil water for irrigation in the desert. Germa became a hub of trans-Saharan trade linking Mediterranean markets with peoples farther south.
