Gerace retains its medieval hilltop urban fabric largely intact, including the Norman cathedral, remnants of its Byzantine and Norman castle on the rocky summit, fortified walls and gates, and numerous stone houses and churches along its narrow streets. The town and its monuments are under Italian state and municipal heritage protection, with the cathedral belonging to the Catholic diocese. The historic center is freely accessible as a living town, while the castle ruins and cathedral interior can be visited, the cathedral remaining an active place of worship.
About Gerace
Gerace was founded in the ninth century by refugees from Locri fleeing Saracen raids, who resettled on a defensible clifftop in Calabria. It became a Byzantine stronghold and later, under Norman rule, an important bishopric with a cathedral built in the eleventh century. The town served for centuries as a center of church and civil administration.
