About George Washington House (Bush Hill House)

George and Lawrence Washington stayed at Bush Hill House in Barbados during their 1751 visit. George contracted smallpox and recovered, an experience relevant to his later military life. The restored residence operates as a museum within Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, separately from the broader World Heritage district.

The house is restored and interpreted as the George Washington House Museum, with gardens and related visitor features.

History happened here at George Washington House (Bush Hill House)

George accompanied his older brother Lawrence to Barbados in 1751. The brothers stayed at Bush Hill, placing the house within George’s only visit outside continental North America. In November, George developed smallpox and subsequently recovered. The illness forms part of his early personal history before his military and political career.

Later, Washington faced the threat of smallpox among soldiers during the Revolution. His own earlier illness provides context for that concern without making the Barbados house a Revolutionary headquarters. The restored property interprets the brothers’ visit within the island’s wider history. Its later drainage tunnels and Garrison setting represent subsequent development, while the residence should be distinguished from any unconfirmed point where the brothers first landed.
