HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Genoa Cathedral (San Lorenzo).
The cathedral preserves its Romanesque and Gothic west facade of alternating black and white marble bands, twin bell towers, a rose window, and the interior Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, along with an unexploded naval shell from 1941 left embedded near the entrance. It is owned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Genoa and remains a consecrated cathedral in active use. The nave is freely open to visitors, while the adjoining treasury museum requires a separate ticket.
About Genoa Cathedral (San Lorenzo)
The Republic of Genoa began building the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in the twelfth century, replacing an earlier church, as the seat of the city's archbishop. Its banded black and white facade combined Romanesque and Gothic elements from successive building campaigns. The cathedral housed relics believed to include the Holy Grail and anchored Genoese religious life.
