Genesar occupied an estate facing Sinepuxent Bay. During the Revolution, Zadok Purnell received authority to construct a battery nearby against possible British naval raids. Maryland's long coastline and shallow bays were difficult to defend, and small earthworks, militia lookouts, and local boats provided early warning and deterrence where no permanent American fleet could be stationed.
