HISTORIC PRESERVATION at General Adam Stephen House.
Adam Stephen’s original 1770s limestone house survives as a museum in Martinsburg. The restored mansion, furnished rooms, collections, gardens, archaeological resources, and nearby reconstructed or preserved outbuildings are maintained by the local historical society within a wooded property overlooking Tuscarora Creek.
About General Adam Stephen House
Stephen was born in Scotland. He was trained as a physician in Edinburg but functioned best as a soldier beginning with the Virginia militia. During the French and Indian War he served as a colonel and second in command to George Washington. He was at Fort Necessity when Washington was forced to surrender. In 1761 he ran against his former commander for a seat in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Washington won the election by a wide margin.
HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at General Adam Stephen House
When the American Revolutionary War broke out, Stephen offered his services to the Continental Army, again serving under Washington. He was with the army during the New York and New Jersey campaigns of 1776 and early 1777, and as a major general he was given command of a division in Washington's army during the defense of Philadelphia.
In the October 1777 Battle of Germantown, Stephen's men fought in the fog with troops led by General Anthony Wayne. Stephen was accused of being drunk during the battle, and after being convicted in a court martial, he was stripped of his command and cashiered out of the army, making him the only Continental Army general court-martialed and immediately dismissed from the service during the war.
