Gebel Barkal preserves the ruins of Napatan and Meroitic temples dedicated to Amun cut into and built against the sacred sandstone mountain, along with nearby pyramid fields, though many structures survive only as low walls and column bases. The site forms part of the Gebel Barkal and the Sites of the Napatan Region World Heritage Site, administered by Sudan's National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums. It lies in open desert and is freely accessible with minimal facilities.
About Gebel Barkal & the Sites of the Napatan Region
Gebel Barkal, a mountain near ancient Napata in Sudan, was revered as a home of the god Amun from the New Kingdom Egyptian period onward. Napata served as capital of the Kingdom of Kush, whose rulers, including Kushite pharaohs of Egypt's twenty-fifth dynasty, built temples and pyramids at the site. It remained a center of Kushite royal religion.
