HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Gates Fort.
Surviving remains consist of the small coastal battery's stone walls and gun platform, overlooking the entrance to St. George's Harbour, with the fortification substantially intact rather than reconstructed. It falls within the Historic Town of St. George and Related Fortifications World Heritage Site and is maintained as public parkland by the Bermuda government. The site is freely accessible to visitors as open ground.
About Gates Fort
Gates Fort, a coastal battery at St. David's, Bermuda, was built by English colonists in the seventeenth century as part of the island's shore defenses. It was named for Sir Thomas Gates, a leader of the 1609 Sea Venture expedition that was wrecked on Bermuda's reefs. The fort helped guard the approach to Castle Harbour against foreign attack.
