HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Gardens of El Escorial.

The gardens of El Escorial preserve their formal Renaissance terraces, clipped hedges, and the Fuente de los Evangelistas fountain within the monastery cloister, largely following their sixteenth century layout. They form part of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a World Heritage Site owned by the Spanish crown and administered by Patrimonio Nacional. Access is included with tickets to the monastery and palace complex.

About Gardens of El Escorial

The gardens of El Escorial were laid out in the sixteenth century as part of the monastery-palace complex built for King Philip II of Spain. Terraced in the Renaissance style, they provided a setting for royal recreation alongside the adjoining monastery, library, and royal residence. They formed part of the principal seat of the Spanish Habsburg court outside Madrid.
