About Ganvié Lake Village
Ganvié was founded on stilts in Lake Nokoué in the seventeenth century by Tofinu people fleeing slave raids from the Fon kingdom of Dahomey. According to tradition, religious prohibitions kept Fon warriors from pursuing them onto the water, making the lake a place of refuge. Its stilt houses supported a fishing and trading community that endured for centuries.
