James Morgan, a Continental sentry, was tried for the killing of the Reverend James Caldwell, one of New Jersey's best-known Patriot clergymen. Caldwell had gained fame as the “Fighting Parson” for supporting the army and militia and for his association with the defense of Springfield. On November 24, 1781, Morgan shot Caldwell at Elizabethtown Point after a dispute over a package Caldwell was carrying. The killing shocked a public that regarded the minister as a revolutionary martyr. Morgan was court-martialed at the Presbyterian church in Westfield, convicted of murder, and hanged on this hill in January 1782; some markers give 1781, reflecting older local chronology. The case shows that military justice continued to operate amid the confusion following Yorktown.
