HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Galleria dell'Accademia.

The gallery preserves Michelangelo's original marble David and his unfinished Prigioni, along with a collection of Florentine paintings and a hall of historic plaster casts, all housed within a former hospital and convent building rather than a purpose-built structure. It is a state museum operated by the Italian Ministry of Culture. Admission is by ticket only.

About Galleria dell'Accademia

The Galleria dell'Accademia was founded in Florence in 1784 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo to provide students at the Academy of Fine Arts with works to study. It later became renowned for housing Michelangelo's David, moved there from the Piazza della Signoria in 1873 to protect the sculpture. The gallery served as a teaching collection of Florentine art.
