About Gadsden’s Wharf British Evacuation Site
Gadsden’s Wharf was the embarkation point for the British rearguard leaving Charleston on December 14, 1782. The departure ended more than two years of British occupation. The property now associated with the International African American Museum connects this military transition with the waterfront’s wider and deeply consequential history.
Archaeological work identifies the museum property as part of Gadsden’s Wharf.
History happened here at Gadsden’s Wharf British Evacuation Site
On December 14, 1782, the British rearguard marched to Gadsden’s Wharf on the Cooper River and boarded ships. American troops advanced into Charleston as the British withdrew, maintaining an orderly transfer of military control. The departure brought the city’s long occupation to an end during the war’s closing phase.
The evacuation had sharply different meanings for those who left. Loyalists sought new homes within the British Empire. Many people of African descent departed in continued enslavement, while others who had escaped Patriot owners secured freedom through British assistance. The waterfront’s story therefore includes both the military transition and contrasting experiences of liberty.
