HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Furness Abbey, Cumbria.
Extensive red sandstone ruins survive, including the roofless transept and choir walls, the carved sedilia, and sections of the cloister, chapter house, and infirmary of the former Cistercian abbey, though its church roof and many domestic buildings are long gone. The site is in the guardianship of English Heritage as a scheduled monument. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Furness Abbey, Cumbria
Furness Abbey was founded in 1123 by Stephen of Blois, later King Stephen, initially for the Savigniac order before it joined the Cistercians. It grew into one of the wealthiest and most powerful monasteries in medieval England, controlling extensive lands in Cumbria. The abbey was dissolved in 1537 during Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries.
