The fort preserves its stone perimeter walls, bastions, moat, and drawbridge largely intact, together with interior barracks and cell blocks that date from its long use as a prison. It is maintained by state authorities in Veracruz as a museum, having passed out of penal use. The fort is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with much of its original layout accessible to visitors.
About Fuerte de San Carlos, Perote
The Fuerte de San Carlos de Perote was built by Spanish colonial authorities in the 1770s as a star-shaped fortress guarding the road between Veracruz and Mexico City. It stored military supplies and later served as a prison, holding captured Texan soldiers from the Mier Expedition in the 1840s. It continued to function as a military prison for generations.
