The site preserves the thick masonry walls of a colonial era redoubt built to defend Matamoros, now adapted to house the Casamata regional history museum. It is maintained by Mexican municipal cultural authorities as a historic monument and museum. The building is open to the public on a ticketed basis as a museum of regional history.
About Fuerte de Casa Mata, Matamoros
Fort Casa Mata was built by Mexican military forces in the nineteenth century as a defensive fortification guarding Matamoros along the Rio Grande. It played a role in regional conflicts of the era, including tensions surrounding the Mexican-American War, when the border town held strategic military importance. The fort formed part of a system defending Mexico's northern frontier.
