HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fuerte Bulnes.
The wooden stockade, blockhouse, and other structures at the site are twentieth-century reconstructions built on the location of the original 1843 Chilean fort, with none of the original nineteenth-century fabric surviving above ground. It lies within a Chilean national park administered by state park authorities near the Strait of Magellan. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Fuerte Bulnes
Fuerte Bulnes was built by Chile in 1843 on the Brunswick Peninsula to assert sovereignty over the Strait of Magellan and forestall rival territorial claims. It served briefly as the first Chilean settlement in the region before settlers relocated to the more sheltered site that became Punta Arenas. It marked the beginning of permanent Chilean presence in Patagonia.
